Induction motors are widely used in the automotive industry. In order to increase the passenger’s comfort, motor designers try to develop new solutions to reduce the noise at its origin, on the electromagnetic side. Damper winding can be a solution to improve emitted vibration and noise. In this presentation, LSEE shows interesting modelling method to evaluate the impact of damper windings on the vibro-acoustic behavior of the motor considering PWM, and compares it with measurements.

Optimising the rotational losses of an EV transmission is essential to improve range. Whilst bearing and gear losses are well understood, the interaction between rotating components and transmission fluid rarely exploited other than reducing lubricant viscosity. Effective methods for modelling drag and fluid transfer around a transmission have not robustly existed previously.
Converting electrical power into mechanical power to drive a fluid pump is wasteful. However, in tightly packaged EV transmissions where thermal cooling is limited it is essential to manage the lubricant. A novel method for passively moving fluid around an EV transmission with low losses has been developed. The system uses existing components in the gearbox to move fluid in a controlled manner. The cost savings of using this technology can be used directly elsewhere to improve vehicle range.
In order to iterate through potential design solutions a suitable computer based modelling approach had to be developed. A new smoothed particle hydrodynamics approach was created to predict the fluid movement and the drag level on the remaining components. A correlation of this approach was carried out with real world testing to prove its validity.

Even during building roads your approach may be different from the standard one. The nature often forces engineers to use their creativity and go beyond typical projects. This leads to some unique, futuristic structures or some additional projects that have to be done and at the end are invisible. Our project of heavy lift barge contains in the second group. One part of this project was to proof that positioning system is sufficient to keep right position at the sea even during unfavorable weather conditions. For this purpose we perform numerous CFD analyses using AcuSolve. Computational cases differed in angle of flow, speed of flow and configuration of the barge. As a result of these all analyses defined working area of positioning system.

Optimization of Spacecraft Metallic Primary Structure with OptiStruct
Spacecraft primary structure is designed to react all the major loads imparted on a spacecraft. Inadequately designed or tested primary structure can result in structure failure during launch and endanger mission success. To maximize the useful payload to orbit, primary structures are typically designed to minimize mass while maximizing strength and stiffness characteristics. Identifying an optimal balance of these three design characteristics can be challenging due to the extensive number of load cases applicable to the primary structure. For this study, multiple finite element models (FEM) are optimized to define a metallic panel capable of reacting launch loads and supporting a large secondary payload mounted to the panel. To react the launch loads, the panel strength margins are evaluated and the secondary payload’s 1st bending mode is maximized to reduce dynamic coupling with the launch vehicle dynamic environment. For the optimization, the mass is constrained to not exceed an available mass budget. The primary structure panel is connected to a generic spacecraft bus representative of a typical Northrop Grumman satellite.

By utilizing Flux and Activate, the designer was able to evaluate the thermal image of the motor, faster at a limited cost and in a limited time.
You will hear from the entire team responsible for the success of this project. From project start: outlining the goal of the project and establishing the workflow, to the evaluation of the motor performances, the computation of the losses for the different parts of the cycle, to project end: completing the thermal computation. You will observe the Activate 1D thermal simulation and the flow of data from Flux to Activate. You will get a rare 360-degree view of what was executed as actual measurements are compared to the results obtained using our elegant software solutions.

Thermal analysis is a key factor when designing motors. We propose to link the studies of
electromagnetic and thermal aspects in transient application with Finite Element Method (FEM) to
represent the thermal state of motor with higher accuracy. As electromagnetic response time is
different of thermal response time, an original method is used for extracting average values on one
magnetic period of losses (Joule and iron losses), and to use them as input for the transient thermal
analysis. So, the temperature in different parts of the motor is extracted, and brought back as input
for the next electromagnetic computation.

Abstract- The paper presents a FEM approach for studying the influence of the capacitor value on the magnetic noise of a network and inverter-fed permanent split-capacitor induction motor. A 4 pole, 24 stator slots and 30 rotor slots, induction motor is modeled under Flux2D Finite Element software in order to determine the amplitude and frequency spectrum of the magnetic forces acting on the stator. The effects of the inverter supply are taken into account by coupling Flux2D with Matlab/Simulink. The results are compared with those obtained from noise measurements performed on the studied motor.

Elimination of hot spots and reduction of eddy current losses in structural parts is one of the important constituents of transformer design. In this work, the eddy current losses in the clamping frame, transformer tank and electromagnetic shielding are calculated using a 3D finite element method. The clamping frame, transformer tank and electromagnetic shielding are modeled by surface impedance method. The paper analyses the effects of electromagnetic shielding and magnetic shunts on the eddy current loss reduction in the transformer tank.
