will host a technical seminar on simulation and high-performance computing (HPC) solutions for the oil and gas industry next Wednesday, September 24 in Houston. Scheduled customer presentations from Chevron, Wood Group Kenny, ConocoPhillips, Baker Hughes, and Sundrop Fuels will provide an overview of computer-aided engineering (CAE) methods and best practices for mechanical earth modeling, subsea and offshore design and analysis, reliability-based design optimization, equipment performance simulation, and more.
The oil and gas industry faces a myriad of challenges, including exploration and operations in some of the harshest environments in the world. Economic viability is dynamic and continually scrutinized, while safety and reliability remain critical to every aspect of product and system design. These factors, along with the rising cost and complexity of physical tests, are making up-front numerical analysis more important than ever.
Accurately representing reality for oilfield production analyses involves a variety of disciplines. Altair HyperWorks®, with its comprehensive CAE suite of pre- and post-processing tools, multiple solvers and an open architecture, enables engineers and scientists to safely and efficiently develop innovative solutions to the challenges of hydrocarbon recovery from increasingly complex environments.

Altair’s focus on innovation through simulation-driven design has led to the development of not only leading computational solvers, but also best-in-class multiphysics capabilities. Coupled fluid-structure interaction may be modeled by coupling AcuSolve®, Altair's computational fluid dynamics solver, with OptiStruct®, a structural analysis solver for linear and nonlinear structural problems under static and dynamic loadings. Risk analysis may be conducted through the integration of design of experiments (DOE) and stochastic studies with HyperStudy®, an open platform for use with nearly all 3rd party solvers. For the analysis and optimization of machinery kinematics and other mechanisms, multibody dynamics solver MotionSolve® may be utilized.
HPC is making it possible to leverage numerical simulation for a wider array of analysis and optimization tasks than ever before. Complex geologies like subsurface salt domes and extreme drilling depths require the integration of multiple numerical solvers with uncertainty analysis as well as advanced visualization and simulation techniques. Such engineering applications generate immense amounts of data, and are generally deployed on large clusters or in the cloud. These and other compute-intensive processes like seismic processing and reservoir simulation may be accelerated using Altair PBS Works™, a leading HPC workload management suite with web-based submission, analytics, and remote visualization products.
